Prayers and Praises

Praises for things opening up more: we are loving our local mall (with wide open spaces for the girls to run around in!) and being able to go to church in person! Prayers as the last weeks in June were the WORST so far for Covid cases, and we don’t know if things are going down yet or not. The president of Brazil now has Coronavirus.

Praises for getting to enjoy some red, white, and blue time with the other Americans here in Brazil. Prayers for our divided country.

Praises as Caid officially has a song (another coming soon) on Spotify and Apple music! Check it out!

Interweb Reads:

  1. Podcasts that made my day: Now that I gave in to a “belt pocket” (I refuse to call it a fanny pack), I have been taking more walks and listening to podcasts. Top all time fave is Holy Post, but the Missionary has been interesting, Taking Route podcast is like listening to friends talk, my friend Ming does Courage up, Everything Happens with Kate Bowler is balm for the soul, Rise with Rachel Hollis helps me grow my career, and just this week Third Culture Thriving has been SUPER applicable, and All that Jazz is my amazing friend Jazzmine Rhoades (look it up in the app).

  2. White Christians, being “Woke” isn’t the Point: “Though the fantasy of reaching some type of fixed, enlightened point is understandable, I need only to remind myself of these truths to remember that it is indeed just that—a fantasy. The reality is that I am on an ongoing journey of discovery.” (Relevant)

  3. An Empty Ocean and the 10 things we Must Remember about Grief: 1. Grief is a process. 2. Grief might not feel like grief. 3. You don’t have to be sad all day to effectively grieve. 4. The Dual Process Model allows for oscillations. 5. People grieve differently, even if they are in the same family. 6. Even if the loss looks the same, it isn’t. 7. Things will never be the same again. 8. Hope and despair can coexist in this space. 9. While loss is personal, it is not novel. 10. Grief can be a gift. (a Life Overseas)

  4. It’s Time we Fundraise in a way that doesn’t uphold while moderation and white supremacy: “by centering the comfort of donors, most of whom are white, we perpetuate white saviorism, poverty tourism, and inequity while allowing our donors to avoid confronting difficult realizations like the fact that wealth is built on colonization, slavery, and other forms of injustice. In order for our sector to achieve its mission of creating the world we want, we must ground our fundraising practices in equity, anti-racism, and racial and economic justice. “ (Nonprofit AF)

  5. Black Girl. White World: “As I reflect on the arc of my life as a black woman raised in a predominantly white neighborhood who attended predominantly white schools and worked in predominantly white organizations at senior levels of leadership where I was usually the only black person in a decision making chair, I’ve come to believe that many people “don’t know where he could have gotten that from.” But while many have made this statement… few have actually asked the question; where could he have gotten that from?” (Ann Voskamp)

  6. The World has tilted on its axis. Here’s a reason for Hope: “Whether you agree or not, these, and other movements are turning the world upside down. And they all have roots in the same fundamental issue: Power.” (Craig Greenfield)
