Sunday Funday July 12
Prayers and Praises
Praises for over 750 food baskets that have been passed out to families around us who have needed them in Brazil—Prayers for the (around) 250 more that we need! (For information about the ministry we serve with in Brazil, and what they’ve done during Coronavirus, check the video below)
Interweb Reads
Free Teaching Resources: I am quick to share all good things, especially when I really think it might help someone. If you haven’t seen our website—it has vlogs, blogs, and freebies. Since teaching online, I’ve realized the power and importance of having your resources online to be able to share. I have just finished the Essay Module that I used at the International school, and the Introduction to English, which I’ve used in communities in Brazil for 17 years now. I have a Literature Module, and a Social Media Module that I am currently teaching online, as well as some resources for Teaching Kids about Differences (Racism). Please let me know if you are able to use any of these—it would make my day:).
If “They’ll know we are Christians by our Love” then will they know we are Missionaries by our Listening? (A Life Overseas)
Why I’m Becoming a Third Class Missionary: A great read—in her many years of experience, she’s seen that many people in the church see missionaries as the ones going to the front lines, unreached people groups, and church planting. She personally labeled herself “second-class missionary” as she was a teacher at an international school, serving the kids of missionaries (and many, many others). It is incredible how overlooked this powerful ministry is! But now she’s returned to the USA to work training up other missionaries, and helping them get what they need—so she labels herself “Third class missionary” because who really wants to support a missionary who lives in the USA? What are your thoughts on this? (Everyone needs a little Grace in their lives)
It’s Complicated: Hit right on the mark as we had 4th of July this year (Communicating Across Boundaries)
Things to do with Race and Racism. If you want to pass on this subject, or disagree, that is okay. But it is important for me and my family on this journey. White Privilege is seeing “white” as the defalt": I remember when in an art museum in Hong Kong there was not one piece of Western Art. None. And how decentering it felt. Discovering your purpose in the midst of Pain: Colorism and Racism are things that directly have/are/will affecting our family. Glorifying White Authors like DiAngelo Erases Decades of Black Writing on Whiteness: while there are many issues with “White Fragility” I think the main one is that it centers us white people once again—this is the main lesson we are trying to unlearn, and even in honest attempt, we fail again often. I am reading “Stamped” and “Insider Outsider” personally, by POC. Systemic Racial Bias in the Criminal Justice System is not a Myth: We’ve watched “Just Mercy” and “13th” and they were very moving. Why I stopped Talking about Racial Reconciliation and started talking about White Surpemacy: wow. This is a conversation to have.
