Extraordinary
When we were young
in the magic of after-midnight light
talking of the future, dreams, ideas
We thought we were extraordinary
We didn’t know how quickly it would fade
How the gray would take over
How our group would dwindle
We thought we could make it last forever
We thought we were extraordinary
But people aren’t exraordinary
We just maybe get to share some
extraordinary moments
Over time the youth-magic changes
From sparkles into something deeper and more real: sometimes
With no need to bemoan our ordinaryness
But to work to create extraordinary moments
Intentionally
Carefully
Life is easier in the ordinary
Extraordinary is risky
Extreme in all directions
It is uncontrolable
Thank goodness we are not extraordinary
That responsibility is too heavy
Living a whole life in something
That was only meant for moments
Those who continue to believe they are the exception
Their tower a prison
Grabbing the edges that keep falling into ordinary
Their greatest fear
Falling down with the rest of us
I am learning to be okay
With my ordinary life
To be faithful and honest with what I have and who I am
To build relationships and systems that grow into something
Greater than I am alone
Into something extraordinary
Where extraordinary moments can be shared
and let go
and appriciated
for the breathtaking beauty and brevity
That they are
